Educational Study Tour Component
The Educational Study Tour component of the NU Fusion Arts program consists of three 3-day tours to New York City, The Tanglewood Music Center near the Berkshires in Western Mass., and Washington, D.C. Each tour is intended to provide a musical, social and historical context to aspects of the diversity of American Music, in addition to providing a real-world context for topics in the music industry and career study. The Educational study tour complements the academic residency component, offering participants an immersive, firsthand experience of professional issues central to music composition, performance, music business and American history.

The New York segment will take place from July 11 - 13, 2008. This tour will include a visit to Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), one of the major performance rights agencies in the United States, a visit to the Harlem School for the Arts, attendance to a Broadway show, and a visit to the downtown area where John Cage's career proliferated. This site visit includes a meeting with philosopher Richard Fleming, co-author of John Cage at Seventy-Five published by Bucknell University Press. The group will also be divided into smaller groups and led by NU-FAX mentors to various concerts, locations, etc. to be determined by the particular offering of events available at that time.

The Tanglewood Music Center segment will take place from July 21 - 23, 2008. Led by Myran Parker-Brass, Director of Education and Community programs for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the BSO will provide master classes and workshops for composers and performers, as well as the opportunity to sit in on Boston Symphony Orchestra summer rehearsals. This segment of the educational tour will once again coincide with Tanglewood's Festival of Contemporary Music, which this year celebrates the music of American composer Elliott Carter and his 100th birthday. Each participant will have a world-class learning opportunity and experience that they will take with him or her for the rest of their lives.

The final study tour will take place from August 12 - 15, 2008, in Washington, D.C. In addition to the mandatory briefing as delineated by the Department of State, participants will be introduced to many of the great monuments of American history, the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Kennedy Center. Participants are expected to depart for the home countries out of Washington D.C., on August 15.
