Brad Hatfield accompanied Jewel in a recent appearance with The Boston Pops in Matthews Arena for an Alumni event May 5th. Along with some standard Pops repertoire, the orchestra also had the a cappella group &#8220;The Nor&#8217;Easters&#8221; sing Bohemian Rhapsody to the delight of the crowd.

<p>On April 26-27, 2012 the Center for Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University will be hosting a two-day international conference entitled “Exploring Dimensions of African Diasporas.&#8221;  Presenters include a broad range of global experts on historical and cultural dimensions of the African Diaspora including keynote speaker Winston James (University of California, Irvine), Jarrett Brown (College of the Holy Cross), Leonard Brown (Northeastern University), Christian Cwik (Center for the Study of Continental America and the Caribbean, University of Vienna), Yvonne Daniel (Smith College), Tamara Ganjalyan (Leipzig University, German), Frank Guridy (University of Texas, Austin), Ruth Iyob (University of Missouri, St. Louis), Michele Johnson (York University), Kelly Josephs (City University of New York), Jane Landers (Vanderbilt University), Tommy Lott (San Jose State University), Quito Swan (Howard University), and  James Sweet (University of Wisconsin, Madison).  Session Chairs and Discussants include faculty and scholars from the Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, College Park, and Washington, DC.</p>
<p>The event will be held at Charles Commons on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The event is free and open to the public.</p>

<p>About Dr. Matthew McDonald</p>
<p>Matthew McDonald is Assistant Professor of Music and member of the Cinema Studies faculty at Northeastern, where he directs the music-theory program and teaches courses in music theory, music history, and film music. He holds a B.A. in music from Carleton College, an M.A. in music theory and an M.M. in piano performance from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University. Prior to Northeastern, he taught at New York University and the University of Exeter (U.K.).</p>
<p>His research combines music-theoretical and music-historical approaches and concerns, focusing on Western classical music of the early-twentieth century and music in film. His articles have appeared in the journals 19th-Century Music, Music Analysis, and The Musical Quarterly, and his essay “Jeux de Nombres: Automated Rhythm in The Rite of Spring” is forthcoming in the Journal of the American Musicological Society. In 2010 he was awarded an ACLS Fellowship to complete his book, Breaking Time’s Arrow: Temporality in the Music of Charles Ives, which will be published by Indiana University Press in the series “Musical Meaning and Interpretation.” He is also currently writing several essays for edited collections on topics related to music in film. McDonald serves on the Professional Development Committee of the Society for Music Theory and is Treasurer of the New England Conference of Music Theorists.</p>
