BS Combined Major in Computer Science and Music…
BS Combined Major in Computer Science and Music with Concentration in Music Technology

The CS/MT combined major requires about 75% of the coursework for each full major. Students are encouraged to explore connections between computer science and music technology. Possibilities include the composition of new musical works based on generative algorithms and/or the development of digital signal processing software for the manipulation of sound. The program is demanding, but is ultimately quite rewarding for the talented students who choose to enroll.
Applying to the combined major as a Music Technology student
Students who have been accepted into the Music Technology program and wish to pursue the combined major with CS should contact the Computer Science department before or at the freshman orientation to state their desire to apply to the combined major. The Music Technology faculty should also be notified at this time. Courses that a CS/MT combined major takes in their first semester differ from those that a Music Technology major takes, so it is imperative that students pursuing the combined major make contact with faculty at the time that they first register for courses in order to ensure that they are enrolled in the correct courses in their first semester.

Students must apply and be accepted into the Music Technology program. The application process involves submission of a portfolio and an interview with a Music Technology faculty member. Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed. It is recommended that students entering the combined major from Computer Science work with a Music Technology faculty member to put their portfolio together. Portfolios must be submitted to Prof. Dennis Miller by March 15 of the student’s freshman spring semester. Note that students must be accepted into the program before they can take any courses specific to music technology. The CS/MT curriculum has students taking only core music courses (Music Theory and Musicianship) in their first semester and beginning Music Technology courses in their second year, once they’ve gone through the application process.
Students should visit the College of Computer and Information Science website for more information about the Computer Science program.
