Academic Policies

All music majors may take placement evaluations in the following areas: fundamentals of music reading, ear training, keyboard skills, basic terminology, and instrumental proficiency. These evaluations profile each student's abilities and facilitate student placement in appropriate classes and recommendation for appropriate remedial work.

Minimum Grade Requirements

Students majoring in music will not receive credit toward their major for any music course for which they have earned a grade of C- or below. Any student failing to receive the minimum grade must retake the course (at no credit) until the satisfactory grade is achieved. Any course taken to meet any part of the prescribed major curriculum may not be taken Pass/Fail. Students should consult the College of Arts & Sciences Guidebook and other University publications for additional information on academic policies and requirements.

Advisors

Each music major is assigned a faculty advior from the Music department. Students meet regularly with their advisors for guidance in setting up their curricula.

Junior/Senior Honors Projects

Juniors and seniors who are members of the Honors Program, who have done superior work in their majors, and who have a high overall academic record are invited to apply to do special honors work during two or three of their last four quarters. such work normally takes the form of a special research project, scheduled as a 4-credit-hour course during each term in which it is pursued.
