Judith Tick

Matthews Distinguished University Professor

Judith Tick is a music historian who specializes in women's history and American music. Her publications include Women Making Music: The Western Art Tradition 1150-1950  (University of Illinois Press, 1986), and articles on Charles Ives, one winning a "distinguished scholarship" award in 1993. She has been an Associate Editor for Musical Quarterly since 1991. Her biography of Ruth Crawford Seeger, Ruth Crawford Seeger: A Composer's Search for American Music (Oxford University Press, 1997) is the first full-scale biography of any American female composer.


PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY AND SERVICE

1993-1997: co-founder and co-chair of the seminar "Music and Culture" for the Center for Cultural and Literary Research, Harvard University.

1991-- : Associate Editor for the "American Music" section of the Musical Quarterly.


HONORS

1999 Named Matthews Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern University for 1999

1998 Ruth Crawford Seeger: A Composer's Search for American Music (Oxford University Press, 1997) was named Outstanding Academic Book for 1998, and was named best book by the Society of American Music

1998 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Ruth Crawford Seeger: A Composer's Search for American Music (Oxford University Press, 1997)

1995: Irving R. Lowens award for distinguished scholarship from the Sonneck Society for Study of American Music for the best article of the year ("Charles Ives and Gender Ideology" in Musicology and Difference ed. Ruth A. Solie, University of California Press, 1993.)

1993 Honorary Citation Award for Service from New York Chapter of American Women Composers, Inc.

1987 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Women Making Music: The Western Art Tradition 1150-1950 (co-edited with Jane Bowers, University of Illinois Press, 1986)
