Northeastern's Music Technology program is a concentration in music composition that teaches students to compose music using the newest electronic and computer-based music technology. Students learn techniques such as MIDI sequencing, sound design, audio for video, digital and analog recording, and the latest methods of delivering music over the Internet. Students also study composition for both acoustic and electronic instruments as well as music theory and history.
Courses include private composition lessons, in which students work one-on-one with an instructor to complete short-form compositions, as well as small classes where students critique each other's music under the supervision of a faculty member. Students in the Music Technology program are required to take two courses in recording, but sound recording is not the main focus of the program. Students also receive priority access to all the program's lab facilities.

Students are given a significant amount of personal attention and receive considerable feedback on their artistic activities. Upon completion of the program, students should be able to compose music for a wide range of genres and settings.
Music Technology students may also opt to pursue a dual major in the Multimedia Studies program, which includes courses in visual arts, animation, graphic design and photography.
